How to update Xamplite without losing settings?

Postby pcguy » 10. May 2009 04:58

Currently using:

###### ApacheFriends XAMPPlite Version 1.6.8 ######

+ Apache 2.2.9
+ MySQL 5.0.67 (Community Server)
+ PHP 5.2.6
+ XAMPPlite Control Version 2.5 from www.nat32.com
+ XAMPPlite Security 1.0
+ SQLite 2.8.15
+ OpenSSL 0.9.8h
+ phpMyAdmin 2.11.9.1
+ Webalizer 2.01-10
+ Zend Optimizer 3.3.0
+ eAccelerator 0.9.5.3 for PHP 5.2.6 (comment in php.ini)

What is the correct way to update Xamplite and in turn the above applications without losing db, php configuration files?

XAMPP for Windows Home Page wrote:For the lite versions exist no upgrades or addons. XAMPP Lite is an only "Take-Run-Delete-Forget-it" package.
XAMPP Lite is not upgradeable like the basic versions so you may need to do some hacking of your own.

Start by dragging the current 1.6.8 xampplite installation folder and at the same time holding down the Ctrl key which will create a fully working backup Copy of xampplite to fall back on if things start to get a bit wobbly - simply delete the faulting new xampplite folder and rename the Copy of xampplite back to xampplite again so you are back in business with your 1.6.8 version that will permit you to have another go - this method of easy back up is helpful for these trial and error upgrades.

Open phpMyAdmin and export all your own databases to sql files (no need to backup the databases that come with XAMPP Lite) so you can import them into your new version - the databases are stored in the xampplite\mysql\data folder in folders that reflect the database names but using phpMyAdmin is the preferred method of backing up databases ready for importing into new version.

You have a copy of all the configuration and ini files in the Copy of xampplite folder so you can edit the corresponding configuration and ini files in the new version - don't be tempted to copy over these file but rather open and edit them with any of the changes you made in the 1.6.8 version.

You also have all your own web site files that can be copied over to the new version of XAMPP Lite folder, which is 1.7.1 but there is a 1.7.2 version in the pipeline, but as yet there is no release date.

Download the ZIP or the preferred EXE (7zip) self extracting 1.7.1 version and extract to the C:\ drive which will create the C:\xampplite folder with all the files and folders in their correct locations.

Next run the setup_xampplite.bat file to set all the paths correctly.

Start Apache and MySQL using the xampp-control.exe file (XAMPP Lite Control Panel) - you can create a shortcut on your desktop for easy access.

Go to http://localhost and after selecting your language you can test all the demos to make sure that your new installation is working including the CD Collection demo which will test that MySQL is working, and do this testing before you edit the configuration and ini file and before you import your databases and your own web site files.

Now when you are confident that your new 1.7.1 installation is working as it should be, it is time to open phpMyAdmin and import all your databases that you backed up.

Edit your configuration and ini files using the older conf and ini files as a reference - remember to save the files and restart Apache after editing.

Copy over your own site files etc. from the Copy of xampplite folder to the new version xampplite folder.

Test you new installation as I believe if you followed most of what I posted you should be up and running without too many issues.

Good luck and I hope this reply gives you some helpful ideas as to how to tackle this un-upgradeable upgrade issue for XAMPP Lite.
