Adding Pear Packages

I want to add some newer pear packages - any documentation that tells how to do this? Machine is windows xp pro.

The documentation appears to be wrapped up in geek speak but this post by Izzy seems to simplify the process some what:

You did not mention which XAMPP version you have installed - Pear is installed in XAMPP 1.7.1 and 1.7.0 by default, but in some older version if you find that there is no pear.bat file in the php folder then simply run the go-pear.bat file and it will install pear and create the pear.bat file for you.
