Cannot get Apache to start

Hi,
I have a windows vista machine and originally installed XAMPP successfully but mysql would not start. Not knowing about the forum I uninstalled, restored the machine to the day before and tried to reinstall thinking I made a mistake with installing IIS and it was an issue. I reinstalled XAMPP and got an error with port 80 being busy and apache could not start. I ran xampp-portcheck and it says that port 80 is allocated to apache but I cannot get it to start, and if I go to /localhost I get the IIS page instead of XAMPP control panel.
Can someone please help?

I don't think xampp-portcheck can tell you on Vista that port 80 is used from Apache.

and if I go to /localhost I get the IIS page instead of XAMPP control panel.

So IIS is running and you have to stop IIS before you can start Apache.

thanks, I ended up shutting off IIS and apache came right up.
