MySQL not working

After installing xampp 1.7 + patch on a plain windows xp pro pc with sp3, I can't start mysql. I keep getting this error message.

I tried it on 2 different pcs and got the same problem.

Any suggestions?

I began having this same problem today after months of smooth sailing. I wonder if a Windows automatic update did it?

After uninstalling XAMPP 1.7, I installed WAMP Server 2.0g this aftermoon and it ran great -- including MySQL. I then uninstalled WAMP Server and reinstalled XAMPP 1.7. I continue to receive the MySQL error.
