When i install xampp i get this error:

Port 80 or 443 (SSL) already in use! Install Apache service2.2 failed!

What does that mean ?

It means that something else is using the ports 80 and 443 that Apache needs exclusively.

Try disabling IIS (Windows server, Internet Information Service) from the Windows Control Panel>Add remove programs or something similar.

Also if you use Skype, that is another culprit and you would need to change the ports that Skype listens on.

Skype uses ports 80 and 443 by default.

You can alter that behavior by going to:
Tools\Options\Connection

Untick
Use port 80 and 443 as alternative for incoming connections

You will have to decide a different port to use for incoming connections before Skype lets you save your changes.

Use ports between 49152 through 65535.

Once you have sorted those out, if they apply to your circumstances, then try and install again.

The link only tells you what ports have been assigned so you could select alternative ports that had not been assigned for use in Skype, but is of no importance now if you don't have Skype.

However you have to disable IIS which will have no effect on your system what so ever other than you will be able to install and use XAMPP and not the Windows web server at the same time, which is happening now when you try and install XAMPP using the installer version.

What OS are you using, you did not say or what version of XAMPP are you trying to install?

No need to edit your post as I think I know where you are at.

This link may help with disabling UAC and IIS on Vista:
viewtopic.php?p=134260#p134260

BTW you need to be logged into Vista as an Administrator or a Super Administrator to manipulate services, XAMPP and any other useful vista processes.
