Yes, remove the service so there is no tick left in the Svc box, then you should be able to start MySQL and go to http://localhost/phpMyAdmin - but do not click on the Admin... button next to MySQL or you will have big issues.

ok tried that, but still the same.
in xampp status, mysql is still deactivated
in localhost/phpmyadmin "root" appears as default user name but doesn't log in:
#2003 - The server is not responding
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

Ok, so now you have no tick in the Svc box in the XCP and when you clicked on Start MySQL, the green running indicator was present just like Apache?

actually no, this is quite weird......
until an hour ago, the green running indicator was present next to Apache and then just disappeared for no apparent reason....
the green running indicator was never present next to Mysql since I installed it....
when I removed the click next to Mysql as you said, it appeared again after 1 second....
here is a screen shot of how the xampp cp looks right now:

Thanks for the screen cap, they do help when troubleshooting as you can imagine it is hard for both parties to relay what each other sees.

OK, Click on SCM in XCP which will take you to the Service Control Manager.

First look for Apache2.2 in the right frame.
Click on it and in the top left you should see Start the service.

Don't click on that just yet.

This time right click on Apache2.2 in the right frame and select Properties.

Make sure startup type is Automatic - if not change it so it does.

Just below that is a Start button - click on it, a Window will open doing things then close.

Now click on OK

Next look in the open XCP and you should now see the green running next to Apache and a tick in the Svc box.

-------

Now look for mysql

It should not be there.

Go to xampp\mysql and double click on mysql_installservice.bat file.

It should install the service and put mysql in the SCM and in the XCP it will put a tick in Svc box and Start MySQL so the green is running.

Now follow what you did with Apache2.2 and check that the Startup type is Automatic and change if it is not - there should be no need to Start it as that should already be grayed out.

Now when you reboot your PC, Apache and MySQL should start Automatically, but make sure in by checking in XCP and if not then simply click on the Start buttons and you should get the green lights.

Sorry it looks a long chore but it should get you sorted this time.

Let me know if mysql was already in the SCM after you fixed Apache2.2.

Now if all is correct you should be able to go to http://localhost/ and do the things you want.

Izzy, first of all a BIG thank you for helping me with this....

I have followed your instructions but here is where I stuck:

Make sure startup type is Automatic - if not change it so it does.

Just below that is a Start button - click on it, a Window will open doing things then close.

Now click on OK

startup is automatic, but when I click on that Start button below, a window opens doing things but after 2 seconds
this message comes up: (translated from Greek cause my xampp is in Greek) " Windows can not start apache 2.2 at localhost. For more info see the "log system file" (or something like this) - if this is not microsoft contact the service provider quoting error code service 1"

and the green running next to Apache is not there too.....

This must be very frustrating for you but we will win this battle.

No the error message is telling you that you perhaps made a typo when requesting phpmyadmin - http://localhost/phpmyadmin/i perhaps.

Go to start>Run...
Type
sc delete apache2.2
Click OK.

Let me know back what the message was after clicking OK.

Do the same for MySQL.
Type
sc delete mysql
Click OK

Let me know what message again please.

BTW did you uninstall a previous XAMPP and then install again, maybe a few times perhaps?

yes this is very frustrating but I am sure we will win this battle too!

ok I did the following
Go to start>Run...
Type
sc delete apache2.2
Click OK.

Do the same for MySQL.
Type
sc delete mysql
Click OK

but no messages came up only a black window (looked like dos window - for half a second)

and yes about 10 days ago I did 2-3 uninstall/install xampp

Progress at last.

Can you start MySQL now and get the green running or is it still playing up?

it seems that those did the work:

Go to start>Run...
Type
sc delete apache2.2
Click OK.

Do the same for MySQL.
Type
sc delete mysql
Click OK

I thought these would delete everything and then we would had to re-install xampp again

Your welcome and I am as pleased as you that it all works now. :D

The cause of the problem were those previous uninstalls and reinstalls.

There was some service residues left in the registry because the Apache and MySQL services were not uninstalled before you uninstalled XAMPP and so after a new install these old services remained and were in conflict.

The sc delete command is from the service controller command set and it deletes those errant registry entries so that your current services are no longer in conflict.

Yes we got there in the end but I bet now you have learned many new things about XAMPP and your PC - after all it is only a machine and machines have to do as they are told. :)

Good luck and now you can enjoy your XAMPP experience.

Re: New to XAMP phpmyadmin problem

Postby regcollins » 13. January 2011 18:05

I'm having a similar problem and am hoping someone out there has some ideas to help me.

I had XAMPP up on my previous computer and did some simple web application development with PHP and MySQL. When that computer died, I installed XAMPP on my new computer (early this month) and had it running and working just fine. This morning I can no longer get into PHPMYADMIN, and my app can no longer access the MySQL database.

Here's part of my error log:

I read through all the replies to this thread and have tried clearing the cache and using another browser with the same results.

Here are my error messages:

PHPMYADMIN:

#1130 - Host 'localhost' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server.
Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed.

From my app:
Warning: mysqli_connect() [function.mysqli-connect]: (HY000/1130): Host 'localhost' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server in C:\xampp\htdocs\register.php on line 120

I looked in the Windows/System32... HOSTS file and I do have the ::1 localhost line. Unfortunately it won't let me edit the saved file - is that the likely culprit or is there something else I can try until my system admin (a.k.a. husband) gets home and can update my privileges? I'm especially confused because it had been working for at least a week with no problems...

Thank you in advance for any help!
