Can't read php scripts

I installed XAMPP but it seems that it is not working properly. It won't read php scripts. When I click on the file it the htdocs folder labeled index.php, it opens using notepad and at the bottom it says "Something is wrong with the XAMPP installation."

You can't open a PHP file in explorer with a (double-) click.

in your case:
http://localhost/index.php
