Object not found, error 404?

Hi. I recently downloaded XAMPP. I'm using Windows Vista home. The installation goes fine, but I cannot locate my files when I save them to htdocs. I enter localhost/xampp/htdocs/test1.php or similar, and I always get the same message:


Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Error 404

Could someone kindly tell me what I am doing wrong? Is this an issue with Vista? Do I have to open up ports? Am I saving files to the wrong place?
