Problem with ROOT_DIR (Failed opening required 'ROOT_DIR/...

PostPosted: 17. July 2008 06:58

ok i have been having a problem with this all day and searching all over the internet so i must be the only one with this problem :evil: lol

for starters the script works on a hosting server, but didnot work fireserv or easyphp so which leads me to belive that I am just having a configuring issue and I am hoping to get some help on this. I installed XAMPP and it works. I can go to 127.0.0.1 and see the page and same with local host. The script is connecting to the DB cause it is displaying info from the mySQL db.

The error I get is with;

Code: Select all
define('ROOT_DIR',   realpath(dirname(__FILE__)));

For some reason it cant find the files, here is the error message;

Warning: require_once(ROOT_DIR/include/dbs.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\htdocs\itzacms\include\members_functions.php on line 2

Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'ROOT_DIR/include/dbs.php' (include_path='C:\xampp\htdocs') in C:\xampp\htdocs\profilecms\include\members_functions.php on line 2

I also use a $root variable and i assumed this is correct cause i couldint find any information regarding this issue.

Code: Select all
$ROOTZ = "/xampp/htdocs/";    // Server path eg: /home/you/public_html/

( I have tried differ variations with that and could not get it to work.)

Heres my apace config file:

[PHP]

;;;;;;;;;;;
; WARNING ;
;;;;;;;;;;;
; This is the default settings file for new PHP installations.
; By default, PHP installs itself with a configuration suitable for
; development purposes, and *NOT* for production purposes.
; For several security-oriented considerations that should be taken
; before going online with your site, please consult php.ini-recommended
; and http://php.net/manual/en/security.php.

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About php.ini ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
; the -c argument in command line mode.
;
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
;
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
; directive = value
; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
;
; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
;
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
; | bitwise OR
; & bitwise AND
; ~ bitwise NOT
; ! boolean NOT
;
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
;
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
;
; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
;
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
;
;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; About this file ;
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
; All the values in the php.ini-dist file correspond to the builtin
; defaults (that is, if no php.ini is used, or if you delete these lines,
; the builtin defaults will be identical).

;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

; be supported on the target server. For portable, redistributable code,

; Output buffering allows you to send header lines (including cookies) even
; after you send body content, at the price of slowing PHP's output layer a
; bit. You can enable output buffering during runtime by calling the output
; buffering functions. You can also enable output buffering for all files by
; setting this directive to On. If you wish to limit the size of the buffer
; to a certain size - you can use a maximum number of bytes instead of 'On', as
; a value for this directive (e.g., output_buffering=4096).
output_buffering = Off

; You can redirect all of the output of your scripts to a function. For
; example, if you set output_handler to "mb_output_handler", character
; encoding will be transparently converted to the specified encoding.
; Setting any output handler automatically turns on output buffering.
; Note: People who wrote portable scripts should not depend on this ini
; directive. Instead, explicitly set the output handler using ob_start().
; Using this ini directive may cause problems unless you know what script
; is doing.
; Note: You cannot use both "mb_output_handler" with "ob_iconv_handler"
; and you cannot use both "ob_gzhandler" and "zlib.output_compression".
; Note: output_handler must be empty if this is set 'On' !!!!
; Instead you must use zlib.output_handler.
;output_handler =

; Transparent output compression using the zlib library
; Valid values for this option are 'off', 'on', or a specific buffer size
; to be used for compression (default is 4KB)
; Note: Resulting chunk size may vary due to nature of compression. PHP
; outputs chunks that are few hundreds bytes each as a result of
; compression. If you prefer a larger chunk size for better
; performance, enable output_buffering in addition.
; Note: You need to use zlib.output_handler instead of the standard
; output_handler, or otherwise the output will be corrupted.

; implications and is generally recommended for debugging purposes only.

Now I could get it to work if replaced all the ROOT_DIR with an absolute path but they wouldint be efficient cause I would have to change every single file that refers to it then after i was finished with then code change them all back and do that for every new release or patch.

I would really appreciate some help with this!!! If you need anything else let me know but i cant think of any other information i can provide for this issue. :)

The error I get is with;
Code: Select all
define('ROOT_DIR',   realpath(dirname(__FILE__)));

Warning: require_once(ROOT_DIR/include/dbs.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\htdocs\itzacms\include\members_functions.php on line 2

The error message is from a require_once(), and not from a define().

This is Line 2 from members_functions.php

Code: Select all
require_once( ROOT_DIR ."/include/dbs.php");

Now after playing around with it some more last night i found that if i put

Code: Select all
define('ROOT_DIR','/xampp/htdocs/itzacms');

at the top of the page the error goes away but then when referenced in another .php file wont work. Its like there's a problem with the order that XAMPP is loading files. Or maybe not keeping the variables... Could that be the problem?

Its like there's a problem with the order that XAMPP is loading files.

Don't exactly understand what you mean. XAMPP/Apache (or any other webserver) is only loading the file which is requested with a browser. And this file can include other files, in the same order the include/require function is used.

if i put "define(...)" at the top of the page the error goes away

Sure, you must define a variable, before you can use it.

but then when referenced in another .php file wont work.

With "referenced" you mean the usage of this constant?
Well, does this other php file also define this constant, or is included from a file which define this constant?

:oops: it seems that when i changed the REQUIRE( config.php) to require_once
**edit** (ill go into more detail incase anyone else having problems with the ROOT_DIR)

The problem was that when the file called on config.php which is where my ROOT_DIR was defined at it was using REQUIRE(), i changed it use REQUIRE_ONCE() and now it is working.

it fixed the problem. Now I am getting a

dir(/localhost/itzacms/userpics/graphics/thumbnail/) [function.dir]: failed to open dir: Result too large in C:\xampp\htdocs\itzacms\include\template_includes\total_graphics.php on line 6

Line 6 code is:

Code: Select all
    $d = dir($aDir);

and the code for the whole module is:

Code: Select all
<?php
  function CountDir($aDir, $aRecurse)
  {
    $Count = 0;

    $d = dir($aDir);

    while ($Entry = $d->Read())
    {
      if (!(($Entry == "..") || ($Entry == ".")))
      {
        if (Is_Dir($aDir . '/' . $Entry))
        {
          if ($aRecurse)
          {
            $Count += CountDir($aDir . '/' . $Entry, $aRecurse);
          }
        }
        else
        {
          $Count++;
        }
      }
    }

    return $Count;
  }
echo CountDir("$GROOT", True);
?>

So is this a programming error or do i need to increase a value somewhere in the php.ini?

well you can navigate to: http://localhost/itzacms/userpics/graphics/thumbnail/
and yes that works it opens the directory.

as far as the win path it would be:

C:\xampp\htdocs\itzacms\userpics\graphics\thumbnail

well you can navigate to: "http://localhost/itzacms/userpics/graphics/thumbnail/" and yes that works it opens the directory.

Such an request with a browser opens the filesystem directory "C:\xampp\htdocs\itzacms\userpics\graphics\thumbnail".
--> dir() is working with filesystem paths, not URIs.

Code: Select all
function CountDir($aDir, $aRecurse)
{
    $d = dir($aDir);
    //...
}
echo CountDir("$GROOT", True);

Now I guess i need to check around and see where eactly it is getting that path from.

The dir() function is getting the path from the variable "$GROOT".
