I just tried XAMPP 1.6.6a and Apache says it started on port 80 but shuts off right away.

The Apache service named reported the following error:
>>> Unable to open logs.

Don't know what is going on with the logs...can't open? That doesn't sound like a typical XAMPP installation issue...help?

Log Name: Application
Source: Apache Service
Date: 6/13/2008 1:13:47 AM
Event ID: 3299
Task Category: None
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Description:

The Apache service named reported the following error:
>>> (OS 10048)Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted. : make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80.

netstat doesn't show anything else using port 80 even though I think fileshare is supposed to.

Event Xml:
<Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
<System>
<Provider Name="Apache Service" />
<EventID Qualifiers="0">3299</EventID>

I am running Vista Ultimate on a dual cpu hp workstation. I loaded everything on D: to avoid the permission problems and Added Apache port 80 to the firewall setup.

Not sure where to go from here. Any help?

A little more info as I try to work through the issues.

I just ran xampp-portcheck.exe and it comes back with good news:

Apache (HTTP) 80 System
Apache (WebDAV) 81 free
Apache (HTTPS) 443 System

MySQL 3306 etc, etc...

BUT when I Press <Return> to continue - the first time I got a program crash, talking about right versions... The second time I did it so I could type it in here, it worked (just cleanly shut the window down.) Go figure.

Shut down Skype and Gizmo...no change.

All Fixed...

Skype was still running in the background. Shut it down completely and Apache came right up... Thanks for the sounding board as I tried to get through this. Why didnt Skype show up as a port conflict with the portcheck tool? Oh well...

hi jdleejr ..

Can you please tell me how you solved this issue. I have the same problem with Apache. It displays for a second in the task manager but then shuts down immediately. Its still's that apache 2.2 is running in the services.. but the server will nto stay up.

Do you know what's causing it to shut down? Does Vista have a built in server thats's causing a conflict. Please help?

Thanks
Biv

Same problem in vista. Not running skype.

Maybe not Skype, but an other webserver.
--> Use a tool like netstat or tcpview to find the process which is listening on port 80/443.
