change location of htdocs?

Postby azjerry » 07. June 2008 01:28

I have a weather application that creates and uploads website files. I would like to use XAMPP for local testing of the pages intead of always having to FTP them to the site first. I can't change the location of the applicatioin. Can I tell Apache to look at a specific folder other than htdocs? This is on Windows XP SP2

edit: I found DocumentRoot in httpd.conf and changed it to point to the folder my webfiles are in. But now I get an Access Forbidden error. I've verified that the folder permissions are wide open. I'm stumped.

Hello and welcome azjerry.

Root Folder

Changing the web site's root folder doesn't have to be done in httpd.conf. In fact, if you do it this way, you undermine some XAMPP administrative features that run from the XAMPP Control Panel.

Have a look at virtual hosts. Search these forums and http://httpd.apache.org/ for a huge amount of information and suggestions. Basically, you can run many sites/domains. Much of the configuration is done in C:\xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-vhosts.conf. Remember to BACKUP before playing. ;)

Access Forbidden error

What is the actual error?

I'm pondering that it might relate to the web page you're looking at, another that the php code thereon is referring to, MySQL database access or even page/folder htaccess.
