PHP send mail thingey...

php and mysql are running
i have installed a script "PHPBB3" on the server and wehen i try to send out mail it returns errors, i dont have the error right now, im at work (school)
i have mercury mail off.. but everything is on and the mial isnt being sent from the server.. why?
help please
