I have tested on a third computer with xp pro, it's working without problem. So Xp Home seems to be the problem...
Any help on this ?

No, the problem is not with XP Home.

I had XAMPP (older version) working fine for few months. I recently tried to run it and it crashed.
I tried to update it to the latest version and the apache of the new version crashes.
(The same error number).

I installed it on a friends computer and it crashes with the same error.

Your XP Pro has SP3??

I guess not!!

It seems that SP3 or one of microsoft latest updates screwes apache.

I also tried WAMP.... Same result.

4 different computers, 4 of them ran XAMPP without any problem before installing SP3.

Now after SP3 installation, all of them are having problems to run XAMPP with the same error in Apache.

I know that SP3 causes few problems like some machines with AMD CPU can't boot, TortoiseSVN is not working for few people (Crashes on checkup due to Time/daylight saving configuration after SP3 was installed etc).
Maybe there is something in all of the machines that I use that is causing Apache to crash that is releated to SP3.

My error is the same as above: fault address 0x0001b317

And now I did a test....
I installed XAMPP on a computer with SP3, started it, started IE (I didn't even browserd to the web server, it went straight to google).
XAMPP crashed.

I uninstalled SP3 and XAMPP is stable and solid like a rock.... Do you still think that I'm wrong?

fresh Apache installation works

Hi,

I have the exact same problem- XP SP3 -> Apache 2.2.8 from XAMPP (or Apache2Triad) crashes in the exact same manner you described, including your weird error.log and windows event log entries.

I tried a fresh Apache installation, and it works (doesnt crash).
Problem must be in one of the many modules XAMPP enables, e.g. Perl, PHP, Python, etc.

Keeping the investigation on...

Ido

Weird stuff, guys:
Let me start off by saying i'm not an Apache / WAMP veteran, hope this stuff will get somone going in the right direction to solve this issue:

I read this post on svn issues with sp3 http://svn.haxx.se/tsvnusers/archive-2008-05/0153.shtml, which talks about date problems in sp3.

This made me wonder about the weird [Sun entries we get in error.log - maybe Sun is for Sunday (today for me)...

Anyway, i went to httpd.conf, changed these two lines:
orig line -> LogFormat "%h %l %u %t \"%r\" %>s %b" common
into -> LogFormat "%l %t \"%r\" %>s %b" common
(removed the %h and %u)

and
orig line -> LogLevel warn
into -> LogLevel debug

...and the behavior changed a bit (now i can load XAMPP default page on http://localhost, but the crash happens at a later stage, maybe when i try connecting to mysql (i'm not sure)

BTW: the last lines in the error.log are from ssl_engine_init.c.
Maybe we're dealing with SSL problems ?

Ring any bells ? anyone ?

is not ssl_mod problem

Excuse me. I am compelled to use machine translation. I do not think that it is a problem ssl_mod. I used apache 2.2.8-not-ssl long time. A computer: Athlon64, Windows XP Pro SP3. I did not meet problems and did not change a configuration, except for section virtual-host. However several days ago this problem has begun.
Now I have reinstalled apache and it works normally. As soon as I replace a configuration file on former the problem comes back. Has returned a default httpd.conf and I shall add changes gradually to notice the moment when there is a error.
