Followed XAMPP Install but Apache not working

I am running Windows XP SP2. I had an earlier install of Apache that I manually installed that was working at one time. Then I screwed it up. SO I uninstalled it and deleted the files. Then I downloaded XAMPP and installed it following the checkboxes. I selected install as a service for Apache, MySQL and FileZilla.

Now when I run the control panel is says it is started but I cannot access http://localhost/. I get nothing back. Also, I do sometimes get a windows error

in Apache. I assume this is related but then I got them before as well and the Apache server worked.

Any ideas where to start looking? I am doing this to stand up a MediaWiki. I already have one at the office but I would like to be able to set up a sandbox at home. I think if I can get proficient with it, I may be able to convince the IIS and Websphere guys that Apache has a place too.

First, if Izzy was here he would throw a fit!!! This is not proper etiquette no matter what the 'perceived' issue/slight is.

Second, this board, other than a few terse comments made by some overtaxed volunteers, has been mainly free of this kind of flaming over the years ... which makes it a pleasure to contribute to.

Thirdly, if you want or need to vent... use the PM and 'take it outside'...and if you need to do that, maybe one should stay out there.

Fourthly, When someone responds to an inquiry, they represent ALL of us... this is unacceptable ... period!...Having spent years on this board and many hundreds of hours contributing time and money to XAMPP, I really am shocked by the language and behavior in this thread... IMHO an apology is due to those who have spent more than 1/2 a month of time and effort in building the Apache Friends community.

... I have seen one apology...where is the other?
