Apache "Unable to open logs"

Postby Bren » 19. February 2008 21:55

Hello

I have just installed XAMPP 1.6.6 on Vista Home Premium.
After overcoming the problem re Skype hogging port 80 and installing MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86), I have found that Apache stops within seconds of my starting it.

The message that I am getting after running apache_start.bat is :

Apache 2 is starting ...
(OS 5)Access is denied. : apache.exe: could not open error log file D:/x
ampp/apache/logs/error.log.
Unable to open logs

Does anyone have any advice as to what could be causing this?

Many thanks!
Bren

I can only suggest a couple of troubleshooting suggestions as personally I have not come across this before and there seems to be little information about this error after searching the net.

Do you log in to Vista as an Administrator?

If logged in as an Admin then the System should not be telling an Admin that 'access is denied' so:
Check your firewall permissions are configured correctly for this drive.

How big is the D:\xampp\apache\logs\error.log file?

Open this error.log file in your text editor and see if there are any more clues showing at about the time you have this error appear.

Also this part of the error message (OS 5) indicates it is an Operating System error and, as such, checking the System Event Log at about the time this error occurs may give even more clues:
Windows Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer->System (and Application)

Try deleting, (or renaming to error_orig.log for example), this error.log file as Apache should create a new file the next time it is started.
(If it is not created after attempting to restart Apache then create a new blank error.log file yourself using your text editor then File->SaveAs->D:\xampp\apache\logs\error.log)

Did you use the Installer release of XAMPP?

Hi Izzy

yes, i am logged in as an administrator and the version I am using is xampp-win32-1.6.6-installer

Have looked at the log files.

The original error.log said:
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:17 2008] [notice] Apache/2.2.8 (Win32) DAV/2 mod_ssl/2.2.8 OpenSSL/0.9.8g mod_autoindex_color PHP/5.2.5 configured -- resuming normal operations
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:17 2008] [notice] Server built: Jan 18 2008 00:37:19
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:17 2008] [notice] Parent: Created child process 5940
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:20 2008] [notice] Child 5940: Child process is running
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:20 2008] [notice] Child 5940: Acquired the start mutex.
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:20 2008] [notice] Child 5940: Starting 250 worker threads.
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:20 2008] [notice] Child 5940: Starting thread to listen on port 80.
[Sun Feb 17 17:26:20 2008] [notice] Child 5940: Starting thread to listen on port 443.
[Sun Feb 17 17:55:35 2008] [notice] Parent: child process exited with status 1073807364 -- Restarting.
Apache server shutdown initiated...

After looking at your response, I renamed error.log and restarted Apache.
It created a new error.log that says:
[Wed Feb 20 21:24:31 2008] [error] (OS 5)Access is denied. : could not open transfer log file D:/xampp/apache/logs/access.log.
Unable to open logs

Have had a look at access.log and it says:
127.0.0.1 - - [17/Feb/2008:17:26:32 +0000] "GET /test.html HTTP/1.1" 200 651
127.0.0.1 - - [17/Feb/2008:17:26:32 +0000] "GET /favicon.ico HTTP/1.1" 200 30894

No clues for me there, so I renamed both error.log and access.log and restarted Apache, and it still errored (!):
[Wed Feb 20 21:35:31 2008] [error] (OS 5)Access is denied. : could not open transfer log file D:/xampp/apache/logs/ssl_request.log.
Unable to open logs

So instead of renaming files again, I just moved ALL files from Apache/logs. Then restarted Apache.
Now seems to be working..... but still not sure why?

Thanks for your help on this!
