Can't login to mysql

just uninstalled xampp 1.6.4 and installed xamp 1.6.5. I can't login to mysql, I get this error: ERROR 2003 (HY000): Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

I'm hoping an old version of mysql isn't still around on my computer. I'm hoping the uninstaller for xamp 1.6.4 got rid of it, but I noticed I couldnt delete the apache or php folders in xampp. How can I login to mysql?
