Apache crashes when passing variable back to MYSQL on .PHP

Hi hope someone can help.

I've loaded XAMPP and tested PHP running with TimeTest.PHP which works fine. O/S Win 2k Prof.

I've created a basic web site and Localhost is OK.

One web page references a field - CompanyName - on a MYSQLtable and uses the data to create a list box and the variable selected is passed [POST] back as a form variable. (All OK)

Dreamweaver then accepts this variable and tests Ok when passing this back to MYSQL to reference other related records. and the recordset php code on the second page shows the details of the related records in bindings.

But when I open the first (selection) page on localhost and submit the selected company Apache crashes and then (normally) restarts.

The error log shows:

But when I've googled the replies seem to suggest answers that fix that PHP/MYSQL isn't working at all, whereas mine appears to be OK on the first page.

Used PHP_Switch.bat, to switch back to PHP4 and now works ok.

(switch of Apache. double click file. enter 4. hit return. Restart server)
