Fixing apache log

Postby Spel » 01. November 2007 23:03

I am working on a hampp more than a year - My log is more than 220 Mb. When I am using webalizer I gets errors - - Sometimes – before one month aprohimately) webalizer finish its work on statistic but last few times didn’t - I have approximately 20 errors when webalizer say that log has some problems - errors look like next few :

1. Strings exceeds storage size
2. Truncated oversized name
3. Oversized log record
4. Skipping oversized log
5. Skipping bad record

What I can do to fix problem and to continue using that type of web statistic.

If you want to reduce the size of the Apache log files:
1. Stop the Apache server.

2. Open (drag and drop) the xampp\apache\logs\access.log file and the error.log file in your text editor.

3. Find the date you wish to delete the entries from.

4. Select them by clicking on that entry.

5. Scroll up to the top of the log file

6. Hold down the Shift key and select the first entry in the log file.

7. All those entries should now be highlighted for deletion.

8. Click on the Delete key.

9. Save the log file and restart Apache.

Done!.

Doing it this way will keep the log entries you want and Webalizer should work again.

Alternatively you could just delete all the entries in the log files if you so desire.
Or you could just delete the error and access log files totally - when you restart Apache they will both be automagically recreated with zero content.

Look in the xampp\webalizer\webalizer.conf file and see if the lines down from # HistoryName and # Incremental processing etc. may be of use in your case.

BTW, xampp/webalizer/webalizer.html is the documentation for Webalizer and the heading INCREMENTAL PROCESSING refers to the above conf file entries

HTH and good luck.

How to find those errors - - how to find all above mentioned errors and to remove them?

I only can see that webalizer work on some “month” and I can’t see specific line and what is error in it – and tip how to find it?

– 220 Mb isn’t little, but I don’t want to “remove all those” statistic data

What is the file name that is 220 Mb?
Where is this 220 Mb file located?
What is your Operating System?
