Very slow server after update

I have updated the XAMPP for Windows from version 1.4.11 [Apache/2.0.52 (Win32) mod_ssl/2.0.52 OpenSSL/0.9.7e PHP/5.0.3] to the latest package 1.6.3 .... and the result is a significantly slower response. That is when running over the local network. I am using XAMPP for a small intranet system at my work. But when running the server just on my local machine (localhost), I see no reduction in the speed on this new distribution.

At the time beeing I have to run the older version on the network to get an acceptable speed.

When running over the network I have made a few changes in the httpd.conf file:
DocumentRoot - To a fileserver directory where the webserver machine has full access.
ServerName - To a name supported by the local nameserver.
<Directory> - To the same as 'DocumentRoot.

In the php.ini I have turned 'output_buffering = On' . I know this might slow the php processing a little, but switching this on/off does not make a lot of a difference.

Anyone who has experienced something like this? I am running out of ideas...
