Pear installation

I read that if I m running PHP 4.3.0 or newer, pear is already installed, and if I m running PHP 5.0, PEAR has been split out into a separate package.
I m new at php, I just installed xampp (the lastest version).
I spent all the day reading how to install pear/package manger but i didn't make it, because I get errors :
When I type C:\xampp\php>go-pear.bat I get a message asking me if I m installing system-wide PEAR or Local copy I type system then a second message appear to me
When I press Enter
any suggestions?
