problem.....help..pls!!

i have a problem....i have installed xampp om my computer....and i put my page in htdocs...so far so good.....i ve put a name for my host in hosts from system32......but when a friend of mine wanted to enter on my page....with the address i have put in host....it doesn't work....but if he put my ip address....it works.....?. what seems to be the problem....??/pls tell me....!!! o and if you wonder, i can enter the page with the specified address in hosts on my computer...where my page is. PLSSS HELP!!!!

A name for an ip you put in your hosts, is only known to your pc and not to any other.

I think what is being said is:
Your friend's computer needs to also have a HOSTS file that resolves to your computer.
