Configuring for local mail

Postby Tim Dawson » 26. January 2007 14:02

I'm completely new to XAMPP and Apache (though I have run a different local server before).
I've got my localhost up and running 'out of the box' using the XAMPP Windows Installer. Now I'm trying to test my site locally.

I want to test the sending of e-mails from the site to LOCAL destinations, but I get a message "Warning: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 553 We do not relay non-local mail, sorry. in..."

I've got Mercury ON, but am confused by all the configuration options. I expect I've got to tell it what domains it should regard as local and arrange for e-mails to be sent either to Thunderbird (my normal client) or Outlook Express. But I'm not sure how. I have looked at the Help but so far haven't got it right.

Any suggestions, please ?

Make sure the domain name you're using is configured as local in 'Core Module Configuration/Local Domains...'

Also, in the smtp server config/connection control, add the local ip address' that you'd like to be able to relay.

Thank you. I think I did the first item already, but will check. Local IP address always confuses me. Is this 127.0.0.1 ? I'm only running the server as localhost, I am NOT running a public web site.

Thanks, Eokorie. I've had a very quick look at your tutorial. It looks like exactly what I'm looking for, so I'm going back for more.

I had the same problem, and after searching for fixes, I finally found it out myself. Apparently I had my SMTP server set to "Do not permit SMTP relaying of non-local mail" You can easily set this to where you want it to be by going into Mercury, going to: Configuration -> MercuryS SMTP Server -> Connection Control, then making sure the checkbox next to "Do not permit SMTP relaying of non-local mail" is unselected. That solved my problem and maybe it will solve yours too! Good Luck!

Is there any way you can make more turorial about the Mercury mail, because I can send and recivce between localhost, but when i try to send out email to example@yahoo.com it won't work there.

http://wdguides.org/posts/files/XAMPP-D ... ail_ns.avi <- this is from when I used to run http://xampptutorials.com (Shutdown December, 2006), I knew it would have been good to keep online so there it is.

Hi eokrie,
I am having a problem with setting up the mail function on my MediaWiki. When I try to send a mail... no errors appear... but notihing happens.. and when I try to get the wiki to sendme my password... or make a email confirmation for a new user...it reports an error, that the some software on the host is blocking the SMTP.

I have a Windows XP Professional (SP2), with XAMPP 1.6.0a installed and MediaWiki 1.93.

I have tried running with pearl mail... but I get exactly the same results. If I look at my Xampp status page ... SMTP is deactivated, even after I follow the instructions on your website.

Basically I only want to pass mail, to our in-house smtp server...

Any ideas what the problem might be.

Appreciate any ideas you or anyone else might have.

Thanks,
Tim Deeming
