Izzy,

I have now tried the command :
sc delete mysgl, and got a success message.

Also tried sc delete apache2, and got the 1060 message

- Can I move on and try to delete the resting files the normal way?

Ok, I have tried now :

sc delete apache.exe
sc delete mysql.exe
sc mysqld-nt.exe
sc delete "filezillaserver"

I get the same response. I really don't understand anything of this.

I am aware that it is now past midnight where you live so if you are tired then try all this when you are somewhat fresher. ;)

I don't understand what you did above as that is not what I posted or in the linked post. If you just follow what I post you will succeed. I did not put mysqld-nt.exe or any of the instruction with a .exe extension. This will have no effect whatsoever.

The command you want is exactly as I posted above:
At a command prompt start>Run...>cmd.exe
Type
sc delete mysql
Hit Enter
Thats all you need to do.
Note that we are not deleting the exe files but the registry entries for mysql.

Edit:
Yes you should now be able to delete the directories including the dll files.

This all worked for you before when you had a similar issue with your upgrade and it should work for you again and again.
Good luck!

Izyy,

Yes abit tired after messing around with this for two days now, and yes it´s late, but I´m a stubborn guy.

Got the files deleted manually now.

However, I still have the Apache icon in my process line, saying "No services installed" by mouse over - does that matter, before I start a fresh install all over again?

That needs a bit more explanation my friend.
Where is this icon and process being displayed?
Is it in the Task Manager?

I am online for some time now as it is Saturday morning here close to mid day. So if you want to post back quickly that will be fine as I can answer you by return. It might have you in bed much quicker. :)

It should not be there as it means Apache is running but obviously not as a service if you get the system message:
1060 The specified service does not exist as an installed service.

Try and right click on the icon and in the context menu select exit if there is an exit menu item listed.

If that don't get rid of it then try a reboot but don't forget to check that after a reboot non of those sticky services have appeared again. Use the Task Manger to check as I pointed out in your upgrade issue post.

Edit:
Open the Task Manager and right click on any apache.exe files you see and click End Proccess. This should get rid of any apache icons in the Tray.

Izzy,

tried a fresh install again - and still no eroors under installation.

Still the same error with phpMyAdmin - furtherrmore I noticed I get a blank right part of screen in the menu option "security".

I think it's about time to give up now.

I really can't figure this out, and regret I ever tried update from 1.5.3a.

So why quit?

It sound like you have another Apache server on your system that is interfering with XAMPP. If so you must uninstall it as XAMPP will not run properly with another instance using the ports.

Try xampp\xampp-portcheck.exe before starting any of the XAMPP components and paste back here the results.

Just double click on the file in the xampp directory.

It should show a list of all your XAMPP ports and they should all show Free.

Have you still got the Apache icon in the System Tray?

Izzy,

Just checked for redudancies of Apache etc. using Windows "remove programs" - found both a Apache HTTP server 2.0.54 and a MySQL 4.1 (the first one noted as used "seldom", the latter stated as used last time "11. october 2006"). I remember installing that Apache last year, in July '05, but I do not have a clue about from where the MySQL comes. I installed XAMPP 1.53a in August '06 (without encountering any of these problems)

I uninstalled both using Windows uninstaller.

After that : Uninstalled XAMPP 1.5.5 exactly according to your instructions, and then performed a new install, and everything is now working fine. :D

- Jesus :!:  - two days for a version increase of 0.0.2 :!:

- But I am very happy now :D

- Thank you for all your kind help, and most of all patience.

I am so pleased for you as it must be a worrying load off your mind.
I hope also that this has been a good learning experience for you.

All's well that ends well.

Sleep well there in that beautiful City of Hans Christain Anderson and wake up to a fresh start with your brand new XAMPP version. :)
