phpmysql logon error

Postby acman » 20. December 2006 03:32

Installed xampp on my XP box (zip method) and everything seems to be ok.

I go to localhost\security and install name and passwords as suggested.
I used the same password in both fields.
PHP is still NOT running in safe mode.

Through localhost\xampp\phpinfo.php I can logon using the name and password I installed to fix the security hole.

But when I go to localhost\phpmyadmin and type in the username and password I created as per above, I get and "ERROR" - "Cannot log in to the MySQL server"

Would appreciate some insight here. Thanks!
AC

One more request please?
If there is a link anywhere here that has some kind of honest step by step, bit by bit, mile by mile 1st do this, next do this install help for installing PHPBB from scratch on a windows xp box detailed with where to make directorys, where to put certain files, what files to edit and when. This I would gladly pay for.

Thank you,
AC

Hello again,

acman wrote:PHP is still NOT running in safe mode.

safe mode is activated by editing the xampp\apache\bin\php.ini file:
From:
;
; Safe Mode
;
safe_mode = Off

To:
safe_mode = ON

Save the file and restart Apache and MySQL to make sure your changes have been recognised. It is good practice to backup config and ini files before editing.

MYSQL SECTION: "ROOT" PASSWORD
MySQL and phpMyAdmin is:
username: root
password: password you set.

XAMPP DIRECTORY PROTECTION (.htaccess)
username: username you set
password: password you set
Note the phpMyAdmin does not use your set username but the username root which is the same as the MySQL user/password

When all things are set and secure your
XAMPP SECURITY [Security Check 1.0]
should look like this with the SECURE in green:
These XAMPP pages are no longer accessible by network for everyone SECURE
The MySQL admin user root has no longer no password SECURE
PhpMyAdmin password login is enabled. SECURE
The FileZilla FTP password was changed SECURE
PHP is running in "safe mode" SECURE
The test user "newuser" for the POP3 server (Mercury Mail?) does not exists anymore or have a new password SECURE

phpBB is extracted to (for example) \xampp\htdocs\phpbb\ or use any directory you prefer in place of \phpbb\ like \forum\ or \bb\ etc.

Then follow this thread to set up your database:
http://community.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopi ... 9816#79816

Then go to http://localhost/phpbb/ (or what ever directory you decided upon)
Using the install instructions provided by phpbb - not sure what the install file name is but usually install.php.
You will be asked for your database details I outlined in the above post.

The best source for info on phpbb is of course their forums or google.
If you get horribly stuck then I invite you to PM me and I will try and help by installing phpbb on my localhost and then following what you are trying to do.
Good luck.

Note to other readers of this thread - PM is by invitation only.

Ok, I got to the setup your database and I must say, this is a little intimidating for a first timer.

Can you help me with this part.
It's asking "create a new table on database Forums".

I'm lost.

No need to set up any tables as your phpbb installation program will do all that for you and it will populate the database with the phpbb content.
So just ignore that part and proceed to the next item.

All you require is the database details when you have set up the database.

What are you finding intimidating about creating the database?
I thought I made it fairly simple to follow if you had the post open and was in front of your phpMyAdmin screens. Just try and follow it word for word if you can.
Let me know what is not clear and I will try and elaborate.

Once you have mastered the database creation part then most of the rest of the phpbb installation is relatively easy.

Also if you are not sure if the database is setup as you like it then just Drop it from the menu and start over.
You can do this as often as you want until you get familiar with it.
