Pre XAMPP install

Postby acman » 17. December 2006 07:57

I am considering to install XAMPP on my system so I can run a PHP board.

My first question is:
Three is a Basic verison and there is an upgrade version.
I'm assuming the upgrade is for people that have a previous version and need to upgrade and also that the basic version is all I need to install as a first time installation? Could someone please confirm this.

Thanks in adv,
AC

Confirmed!

Use either of the three installation methods of the Basic version 1.5.5 - Installer, Zip or 7Zip. The choice is yours.

Most plump for the Installer version but those with more experience tend to use the Zip or 7Zip versions as they can be installed with more personal choices of location and the 7Zip uses much less download bandwidth. You would need the 7Zip program installed first to use that version.

Izzi, thanks for your quick response.
As far as zip or 7zip. I'm very familer with zip/rar ok but have not heard of 7zip yet. Is there any difference in outcome other than the file sizes and bandwidth between the to zip formats?

And wow... I sure hope it's as easy to install as the Quick Installation Guide makes it look!

On a different subject, can you or someone that knows tell me which of the php boards free or paid (maybe both) would be the easiest board to customize and make your own without having to be a decent programer?

Thanks again!

The Zip file you extract as you would normally say to C:\ so you have a path structure of C:\xampp which is what I use.

The 7Zip is a self extracting (sfx) exe archive with similar placement control.

7Zip will handle zip rar etc. also and if you have the program you can open an archive, even a sfx exe archive, and extract the files in bulk or individually to a directory of your choice.

So in short either of the archived files will perform much the same.

The beauty of choice is that if you don't like one method just delete the installation directory, download the next method and see if that one is more to your liking.

Remember when it come time to upgrade to a new version you will have to use the same installation method you used to install the original version. Makes sense, eh?

Use the forums here if you have any issues, after reading all the above links first.

XAMPP has been designed to work "out-of-the-box" for most people.

Most phpbb boards will install without much hassle or programming skills. All you need to do is follow the boards installation instruction, which are usually very good, and your up and running.
