How to work to mail() function

I have a problem regarding sending an email when im developing a php im using a xampp and i want to work the mail() function. i have my xampp which have a mercury mail server but i dont how to use it! can you help what im going to do and how to configure it! so that i can send mail on localhost.. thanks in advance
