I can't shut down MySQL, or do anything with it.

I have non-install xampp and win XP SP2. I tried to reinstall xampp (delete it and unzip it again), then i treid to unzip it to another partition, then tried to install mysql as a system process (I restarted computer after that) and nothing works.
Mysql is only able to start, then it freezes and only thing i can do is end it's process in task menager - there I noticed that it uses only about 3 MB of memory, I think it used more when it was working properly.
New download wouln't help - I alredy have undamaged zip archive and reinstalation of windows is something I don't like to do.

Does anybody have an idea how to fix it

Freezes - doesn't work, it seems that it is active, comand prompt screen is displayed as usual but it doesn't work. I can't connect to my it by using mysql command or by using phpmyadmin and I can't shut it down by clicking mysql_stop.

How did you solve it incase another member of the forum has the same or similar issue and finds your post looking for a solution.
Thanks.
