Having problems changing old-passwords option for mysql

Hi, all I'm having problems disabling the old-passwords option in the mysql that came with xampp.

I have checked several times my configuration files and am sure that the old-passwords option is not anywhere in the file.

I have also unistalled and reinstalled the service using --defaults-file so as to point to the file that should be used to get all the options, but when I restart mysql and have it show me the variables it keeps telling me that old-passwords is on.

Any ideas?
