XP Home

Hello:

Is there any difference in the XAMPP installation procedure between XP Pro or XP Home? I have XP Home.

I am only interested in using the server for local development not hosting a website. Where can I find the setup instructions to do this? Are they included in XAMPP?

I installed XAMPP and everything seemed to be working correctly but I still cannot open a PHP file with my PHP editor - and the OS is not seeing Apache. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

I've never had a problem with Xampp on XP Home, and have installed it on several. Are you certain it's actually running?

Thanks for the answer.

It was running but I ripped it out of my system because I did not know what I was doing... Now I kinda - sorta know whats going on.

I have since installed Apache and then I installed PHP. I followed the instructions I found at http://www.devshed.com/

I have not yet installed mysql - I may instead go back to XAMPP.

Have you installed ZEND Optimizer? I will need that next.

Install XAMPP is simple:

1. Download the zip/7-zip package of XAMPP (I prefer this because it doesn't require installation).

2. Extract it. You can extract it to c:\xampp or other place else.
3. Run setup_xampp.bat
4. Run xampp-control.exe, start apache and mysql

And everything done.

You can now put your php file in /xampp/htdocs to start using PHP.

BTW, stop IIS before start Apache, otherwise your apache will not start.

Hope it helps.

alucard01:

Thanks so much for your help. You are absolutely correct. The zip file extraction went without a hitch and I'm good to go. I found the mysql installation per the instructions at www.devshed.com to be almost impossible.
XAMPP IS THE BEST!!!

Thanks again,

Jeff
