MySQL and note-taker or PIM products

Related to my first post on help with apachefriends / xampp / MySQL, I also have a request related to the use of note-taker and PIM products based on MySQL.
Any good ideas or product suggestions or even sources of database examples which one could download, use and extend? These suggestions would be most welcome.
