MySQL won't initialize (Apache & PHP working fine)

Apache and PHP installed and are running correctly, but I'm struggling with MySQL. I used the "noob" installer version and everything is still plain vanilla (I have not changed any passwords, config settings, etc.) When I run mysql_start.bat I get this:

Code: Select all
Diese Eingabeforderung nicht waehrend des Running beenden
Please dont close Window while MySQL is running
MySQL is trying to start
Please wait  ...
MySQL is starting with mysql\bin\my.cnf (console)
Can't start server: Bind on TCP/IP port: No error
050727 15:49:50 [ERROR] Do you already have another mysqld server running on port: 3306 ?
050727 15:49:50 [ERROR] Aborting

050727 15:49:50 [Note] mysql\bin\mysqld: Shutdown complete

Also, just in case I was trying to start it twice I also ran mysql_stop.bat:

Code: Select all
Mysql shutdowm ...
mysql\bin\mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'pma'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

Oddly enough, when I run xampp-control.exe it tells me that MySQL is running!

What am I doing wrong?

There is allready another MySQL running.

That would be the logical conclusion ... except I've never before had MySQL on this box. I thought that perhaps XAMPP had tried to launch it twice, which is why I used the "stop" batch file. No matter how many times I reboot and run the MySQL stop batch file, I get the same results.

Curiously, xamp-control.exe always tells me MySQL is running, and even when I click the button to stop it, a few seconds later it tells me it's running again. Yet nothing else can "find" MySQL.

How do I verify whether there really is another copy running somewhere?

Are you running this on a server OS? Is it possible that something else is running on th same port? If it's a Microsoft server operating system, it can be difficult to figure out just what is running where sometimes.

You can use this tool.
