apache crashes when stopping ?!

when i try to stop the apache service, i get :
The instruction at "0x77f8206b" referenced memory at "0x00000014". The memory could not be read.
any idea what causes this ?
running unzipped xampp 1.4.13 on Windows 2000 Pro.
