Is there anything in the log that could help? I have no idea what causes it...

I did fix it by reading stackoverflow: I delete all the files with @@@ in them, in the mysql/data folder. When i delete them, MySQL starts normally again. But as of the cause... I have no clue.

This appears to happen from time to time if you are not running MySQL as a Windows Service. You can repair the databases when it happens, or use XAMPP's Control Panel to configure MySQL to run as a Windows Service.

After having database issues occasionally over several months, and correcting the issue, I switched to using MySQL as a Windows Service. It has now been almost half a year since making that change, and I have not encountered any issues related to MySQL since then. Highly recommended change in my view.

How do you run it as a service?

Simply by putting a cross to the option in the Xampp Control Panel. Its in front of each service.
