Importing a Wordpress Database

Postby Ciara » 06. October 2011 12:25

I looked up so many publications on how to export a wordpress database only to find the instructions impossible to follow.

I'm changing hosting accounts and have had no problem exporting the wordpress database. Thing is importing the database in such a way that the wordpress blog can still find it and associate with it. Any suggestions on a more efficient way of doing so? Like I said, other publications are inadequate. Thanks in advance.

That was in 2011. Now in 2020, I've done the same searching. There are lots of videos and articles purporting to explain how to set up a clone of your hosted wordpress site in a localhost server to be able to easily test, develop, and edit to then be able to upload it into your original hosting service or another if you so desire.

Many of these appear to be from very reputable sources, but I have not found a single one that works. I've also tried plugins like UpDraft and Duplicator with the same bunch of errors and inability to get a working localhost site. I even went through a tutorial showing you how to use Bitami wordpress to set up a local site that also doesn't work.

I've always been very careful and good at following instructions. I even learned how to use a number of AWS services and successfully deployed on there. I'm not a total dummy newbie. Yet this has be completely baffled. I've spent a week on this. I uninstalled and reinstalled Xampp. I can get simple sites to work, but wordpress allways fails in the importing of my live site database to the localhost. I know my live site's database settings.

phpMyAdmin on the hosting seems to export the tables alright. On the localhost I create a database using the same default type setting and also the one of my site's database. using utf-8 character set, and tried both enabling and disabling foreign key checks. I'm using SQL format. No matter what I try, the tables import fails. I don't know enough SQL to figure out what is wrong, but that is nothing I did. This all comes without my intervention, and according to all explanations it is supposed to work. I haven't seen anyone even mention a problem.

I've been allover StackOverflow searching for answers or tips. So, that's why I'm here, hoping to get better results, or a path to solving this.

So many words but not a single error message? phpmyadmin should give you at least information about the result of your import and probably a hint on the issue.
