Map Plugin alternative to Google Maps using MapQuest, with directions
By Fullworks

https://wordpress.org/plugins/get-directions/

Description
Google Maps has been changing to a paid for model and now many website owners are looking for alternative plugins that do the same job.

The pricing model for Google Maps requires an active billing account, which gets a credit per month of $200 ( at the time of writing ), which in theory gives you 28,500
dynamic maps, but beware the charge is per API call not per map transaction and that can easily be used up with substantial over runs and unexpected charges.

Many are looking for OpenStreetMap solutions, OpenStreetMaps doesn’t have a directions module. MapQuest is one service that provides a directions / routiong module on top of an OpenStreetMap solution.

The MapQuest service is free for up to 15,000 map transactions per month, which is sufficient for many websites, visit the MapQuest developer website for pricing plans.
( this plugin has no commercial association with Mapquest). A couple of advantages MapQuest has over Google, you don’t have to lodge a credit card so you won’t accidentally
get a massive bill for overage,
map transactions are generally less numerous than API calls, so whilst 15,000 may seem less than 28,0000 you should find the realities different,
and finally, if you do need decide to pay for mapquest, it works out at closer to $3 per thousand compared to Google’s $7 per thousand.

This is a map display and routing plugin that uses MapQuest.

A fantastic way of showing your business location and for your users to get travel directions to you.

Out of the Block: OpenStreetMap
By gsarig
https://wordpress.org/plugins/ootb-openstreetmap/

Description
A map block for Gutenberg which uses OpenStreetMap and Leaflet.js. It needs no API keys and works out of the box (or, out of the Block, if you prefer). Benefiting from Gutenberg’s potential, the plugin tries a different take on how to add your locations on the map and rethinks a few things, UX-wise.

Instead of manually adding coordinates for each one of your markers, just click-and-drop them directly on the map. You want to adjust their position? Just drag them wherever you want. And instead of filling-in custom fields to set each marker’s popup content, just open that popup and start writing in it, the Gutenberg way (it supports WYSIWYG editing, with links, images, and all). It even stores the map’s zoom level as you use it so that you don’t have to set it by hand.

Travelers' Map

By Camille Verrier
https://wordpress.org/plugins/travelers-map/

Description
Travelers’ Map allows you to display your blog posts on a dynamic map using the Leaflet module and OpenStreetMap open data. This plugin is entirely free.

See this plugin in action on my hiking blog.
How to use: Get started with Travelers’ Map

FEATURES OF TRAVELERS’ MAP
Geolocalize your posts, pages or custom post types on a map and choose the marker image. A search module is available to quickly locate the desired location.
Add your own images to customize your markers.
Insert a dynamic map that displays your articles using a simple shortcode. Choose the dimensions of your map.
Filter the posts you want to display on the map by their type, categories and tags.
Markers clustering is automatic when marker density is too high, to prevent them from overlapping.
Customize the appearance of your maps with OpenStreetMap tile providers. By default, the plugin uses CARTO’s free and open “Voyager” map tiles.
Customize the popup style and content for your markers. You can also disable the plugin’s CSS if you want to design your own popups.
Travelers’ Map is compatible with the new Gutenberg editor and the classic editor.
This plugin does not add any tables into your database.
The geolocation data of your posts are saved as meta-data and are not deleted if Travelers’ Map is disabled or deleted. However, if you want to uninstall Travelers’ Map permanently, an option is available to clean your database of any data added by the plugin.

Re: XAMPP can be used commercially or not

Not completely. Mercury Mail for example is only free for non commercial use.

But AFAIK that is the only component.

Apache, MariaDB, PHP, PERL, Tomcat and Filezilla Server are free for commercial use too.

This is also my problem (and that of the other supporters here): this portal does not generate any income, our help is free. There is no advertising revenue and no consulting fee.

That's why the support is limited to the little guy who just wants to set up a web server at home for learning purposes. We can't and don't want to support commercial interests, the idea of supporting professionals in their work for free is too unpleasant.

Re: Bringing an old install up to date

Hi,

lbarron wrote:I started a position with a new company a few months ago, and one thing that I inherited was an XAMPP install that's quite old...looks like 1.7.4 VC6 dated to September of 2011. It's a credit to the product that it's still running correctly and is actually used in some production capacity, but for security purposes if nothing else really needs to be brought up to date.

Please read the [INFO] How to not fail getting help here (Section: Scope of support)

lbarron wrote:What would be the best way to bring this install up to date?

The best way for a productive commercial environment would be:
  • Install a second independend server (preferred a Linux OS)
  • Install Apache, PHP, MariaDB, etc (whatever you need) as single components and configure them the way you need to fit your companies requirements
  • Do a full backup of all the asset and database data of your current running old XAMPP environment
  • Restore the backuped data on your new server
  • Fix all incompatibility issues
  • Just if everything is running smoothly on the new server start to replace the old server with the new server

lbarron wrote:Should I just apply the updates up to where MySQL was still supported?

XAMPP does not have an update procedure. Updating a XAMPP version does mean doing a fresh install and import the asset and database data.

lbarron wrote:Is there a way to move that over to MariaDB and continue to stay on the most recent release?

MariaDB will be your least frustrating problem, because MariaDB is to MySQL very much binary replacementable, especially the base functionality.
The very very more time consuming part would be updating the php scripts.

Why are large enterprises not leveraging Apache?

Hello everyone,

We all know the benefits of Apache, PHP (LAMP stack) and open source technology more broadly. Some of us may also see the niche of commercial services called "professional services" or "management consulting". Usually, management consultants rely on Microsoft technology and avoid Apache (for hosting web purposes) in particular. I don't, but the consensus is that large consultancies would instead use MS tech.

Do you know any successful cases of professional services firms who leverage Apache or more broadly open source technologies for a web site hosting? Let us not focus on startups; let us target organisations with at least 50 employees.

Thank you,

Re: WordPress 5.4 - release to the world - tons of new featu

excluding .....from leaflet map maker to Travelers' Map

hello dear Community,

today we want to show you some cool plugins that support the integration of maps - see for a overview here https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/MAPS/
Technically, you don’t need a plugin to add a Google Map to your WordPress site. The Google Maps API provides an embed-code :: this you can insert in a WordPress page or post via the Gutenberg-Block Editor. Thats it - and youre done! A whole bunch of map plugins for WordPress (cf. https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/MAPS/ ) come equipped with a whole lot of top notch and very advanced features you don’t get with a manually embedded map.

In addition to single or multiple locations, interactive map plugins provide:

- youre able to add - Custom icons and markers
- Animations
- Filter and search options
- Clusterization
- Street views
- Zooming and panning
- pinning the map to a block
- using the data that comes shipped with the map.

if you are using a map plugin for WordPress: your live is easier; imagine you can reuse and update maps across your whole website.
This eliminates the need to create a new page every time you want to add your map somewhere else on your website.

today we show you the maps - especially those ones that work with openstreetmap: see the following ressources:

a. https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/openstreetmap/

Waymark: By Joe Hawes
https://wordpress.org/plugins/waymark/
Add Overlays (Markers, Lines and Shapes) to create detailed interactive Maps. Simply add them to your content using the Waymark Shortcode.
Using the Editor, each Overlay you add to a Map can be given a title, description, image and categorised using Types. Waymark can also read Markers and Lines from file (GPX/KML/GeoJSON supported), allowing you to easily embed data stored in these formats.
Waymark was designed to be very customisable, allowing you to change icons, colours and styles, as well as the ability to add multiple Basemaps.
GALLERY
An image gallery can be displayed at the bottom of the Map for Markers that have images associated with them. Clicking on an image will display the relevant Marker. Photos are added through the WordPress Media Library and if Waymark detects location metadata (EXIF), photos are added to the Map where they were taken.
You can see an example of the image gallery here.

Re: Shortcodes Ultimate: a comprehensive collection of vario

hallo Altrea, :D

https://flosshub.org/sites/flosshub.org/files/neus.pdf
Problem Outline: The vanishing cost of communication Before the proliferation of the Internet technology, there was a simple filtering system that kept the quality and relevance of transmitted information mostly above a certain threshold. It was called cost. Because every copy of information and every movement of that copy was tied to physical matter, it always incurred real cost that someone had to shoulder. Therefore, only such information which was deemed by someone to be worth spending money on copying and distributing, had a fighting chance of ever being seen by more than a trivial number of people. Yes, there have always been tabloids whose information quality, when measured against objective criteria, did not do terribly well, but in terms of a fitness for use definition, this content still had to have a certain “quality”, because people actually paid to read it. And while there have always been “nut cases” creating their own newspaper from their flat on a copying machine, your chances of ever coming across that content fell dramatically (probably to the tune of N2) with your physical or social distance from the source. So traditionally, a piece of information had to pass through several layers of weeding, selecting and editing before it would get a fighting chance to come to the attention of a wider audience. Publishers and advertisers were effectively making a bet, with their very real money, on the quality (again in terms of fitness for use) of the content being suitable for its intended recipients, because every copy of information incurred real costs. Therefore, it used to be good business to limit the proliferation of your information to coincide with your intendet audience, i.e. the target segment or market. And the better you were at addressing only your target segment with the information (and in turn designing the information to be relevant to the recipients) the less money you wasted. This incentive brought about editors, proofreaders, market analysts, etc. The Internet, however, dramatically lowered the cost of copying and distribution – to practically zero. The last time such a major drop in the cost of information proliferation occurred was probably IQ 2001: The 6th International Conference on Information Quality at MIT 3 Gutenberg’s invention of movable type5 . As with Gutenberg’s invention, this more recent drop in the economic cost of distributing information has created major shockwaves around the world. The success of the Internet as the undisputed global communications medium of the future and the rise (and often fall) of countless businesses built around it are an example of this kind of shockwave

Managing Information Quality in Virtual Communities of PracticeAndreas Neus: in this paper we review how the new economics of information enable a new paradigm of collaboration. Spearheaded by the Open Source community, this evolutionary approach to collaborative content creation is a way to address information quality in virtual communities of practice. Based on experience gained in community projects, a few simple steps toward improving the quality of information in virtual communities are presented and illustrated.

in distributed software development, two sorts of dependencies can arise. The structure of the software system itself can create dependencies between software elements, while the structure of the development process can create dependencies between software developers. Each of these both shapes and reflects the development process. Our research concerns the extent to which, by looking uniformly at artifacts and activities, we can uncover the structures of software projects, and the ways in which development processes are inscribed into software artifacts. We show how a range of organizational processes and arrangements can be uncovered in software repositories, with implications for collaborative work in large distributed groups such as open source communities.

From a Firm-Based to a Community-Based Model of Knowledge Creation: The Case of the Linux Kernel Development We propose a new model of knowledge creation in purposeful, loosely coordinated, distributed systems, as an alternative to a firm-based one. Specifically, using the case of the Linux kernel development project, we build a model of community-based, evolutionary knowledge creation to study how thousands of talented volunteers, dispersed across organizational and geographical boundaries, collaborate via the Internet to produce a knowledge-intensive, innovative product of high quality. By comparing and contrasting the Linux model with the traditional/commercial model of software development and firm-based knowledge creation efforts, we show how the proposed model of knowledge creation expands beyond the boundary of the firm. Our model suggests that the product development process can be effectively organized as an evolutionary process of learning driven by criticism and error correction. We conclude by offering some theoretical implications of our community-based model of knowledge creation for the literature of organizational learning, community life, and the uses of knowledge in society.

How to create a self-signed certificate with OpenSSL?

hello dear Apachefriends,

i am fairly new to the process of generating a SSL-certificate ....: Is it possible to do self signed certification a website without domain name?
to shed a light i have gathered some information: i have read some documentations and sumarize it here - trying to find out the information that helps me to answer the question.

i have gathered some infos here at: https://www.openssl.org/ and at stackoverflow - see below

OpenSSL is a robust, commercial-grade, and full-featured toolkit for the Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocols.
It is also a general-purpose cryptography library. For more information about the team and community around the project, or to start making your own contributions, start with the community page. To get the latest news, download the source, and so on, please see the sidebar or the buttons at the top of every page. OpenSSL is licensed under an Apache-style license, which basically means that you are free to get and use it for commercial and non-commercial purposes subject to some simple license conditions.

Legalities Please remember that export/import and/or use of strong cryptography software, providing cryptography hooks, or even just communicating technical details about cryptography software is illegal in some parts of the world.
So when you import this package to your country, re-distribute it from there or even just email technical suggestions or even source patches to the authors or other people you are strongly advised to pay close attention
to any laws or regulations which apply to you. The authors of OpenSSL are not liable for any violations you make here. So be careful, it is your responsibility. ssl certificate without domain name

the downloads: https://www.openssl.org/source/
The master sources are maintained in our git repository, which is accessible over the network and cloned on GitHub, at https://github.com/openssl/openssl. Bugs and pull patches (issues and pull requests) should be filed on the GitHub repo. Please familiarize yourself with the license. The table below lists the latest releases for every branch. (For an explanation of the numbering, see our release strategy.) All releases can be found at /source/old. A list of mirror sites can be found here. Note: The latest stable version is the 1.1.1 series.

The question is:
Is it possible to do self signed certification a website without domain name? I have read that we can do this with the servicelet'sencrypt.org: it seems so that it does not issue certificate for having no domain name.
i have heard about various options and methods:

a. - getting a certificate from LetsEncrypt that would be trusted by most of the browsers that are out there:
preliminaries: we need a domain that resolves to our server.
- LetsEncrypt does not issue certs for IP-addresses nor for custom dev-domains like .local. and the like.

secondly: We - of course are also able to create and sign a certificate ourself, for every domain name we want, or even for IP addresses. The domain name can be anything, and doesn't necessarily be the one we use to access the site.

In this case i guess that the webserver won't mind here.

But that said i can imagine that our browser will display a whole bunch of warnings and will throw lots of errors, though (CN mismatch and things alike, non-trusted signature and other things more), but if we just skip/ignore those kind of warnings and messages then subesquently we can access the site via HTTPS.

the creation process: How to create a self-signed certificate with OpenSSL

i am on Linux and i guess that we can do this on console: It's fairly easy to create a self-signed certificate on linux. If we are on Linux we just use the openssl req command.
It can be tricky to create one that can be consumed by the largest selection of clients that aree browsers and command line tools too. The many browsers out there have their own set of requirements, therfore it may be a bit difficult - some browsers are more restrictive than the IETF. The requirements used by browsers are documented at the CA/Browser Forums (see references below). The restrictions arise in two key areas: (1) trust anchors, and (2) DNS names.

so the creation-process can have the following steps - according this documentation taken from here: ttps://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecen ... enSSL.html

Procedure To generate a self-signed SSL certificate using the OpenSSL, complete the following steps:
Write down the Common Name (CN) for your SSL Certificate. The CN is the fully qualified name for the system that uses the certificate. If you are using Dynamic DNS, your CN should have a wild-card, for example: *.api.com. Otherwise, use the hostname or IP address set in your Gateway Cluster (for example. 192.16.183.131 or dp1.acme.com).
Run the following OpenSSL command to generate your private key and public certificate. Answer the questions and enter the Common Name when prompted.

Code: Select all
openssl req -newkey rsa:2048 -nodes -keyout key.pem -x509 -days 365 -out certificate.pemCopy

Review the created certificate:

Code: Select all
openssl x509 -text -noout -in certificate.pemCopy

Combine your key and certificate in a PKCS#12 (P12) bundle:
Code: Select all
 openssl pkcs12 -inkey key.pem -in certificate.pem -export -out certificate.p12Copy

Validate your P2 file.
Code: Select all
openssl pkcs12 -in certificate.p12 -noout -info

... taken from here: https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgece ... enSSL.html

Here are the options described in more detail, from the documentation at https://www.openssl.org/docs/manmaster/man1/req.html
note: the documentation is actually much more detailed than the following notes; I just summarized it here:

Code: Select all
openssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout key.pem -out cert.pem -days XXX

Code: Select all
req

PKCS#10 certificate request and certificate generating utility.

Code: Select all
-x509

this option outputs a self signed certificate instead of a certificate request. This is typically used to generate a test certificate or a self signed root CA.

Code: Select all
-newkey arg

this option creates a new certificate request and a new private key. The argument takes one of several forms. rsa:nbits, where nbits is the number of bits, generates an RSA key nbits in size.

Code: Select all
-keyout filename

this gives back the filename to write the newly created private key to.

Code: Select all
-out filename

This specifies the output filename to write to or standard output by default.

Code: Select all
-days n

when the -x509 option is being used this specifies the number of days to certify the certificate for. The default is 30 days.

Code: Select all
-nodes

if this option is specified then if a private key is created it will not be encrypted.

The documentation from the documentation at https://www.openssl.org/docs/manmaster/man1/req.html
is actually more detailed than the above; I just summarized it here.

As of 2020, the following command serves all our needs, including SAN:
cf https://stackoverflow.com/questions/101 ... 5#10176685

Code: Select all
openssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:4096 -sha256 -days 3650 -nodes \
-keyout example.key -out example.crt -extensions san -config \
  <(echo "[req]";
    echo distinguished_name=req;
    echo "[san]";
    echo subjectAltName=DNS:example.com,DNS:example.net,IP:10.0.0.1
    ) \
  -subj "/CN=example.com"

In OpenSSL ≥ 1.1.1, this can be shortened to:

Code: Select all
openssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:4096 -sha256 -days 3650 -nodes \
  -keyout example.key -out example.crt -subj "/CN=example.com" \
  -addext "subjectAltName=DNS:example.com,DNS:example.net,IP:10.0.0.1"

It creates a certificate that is

valid for the domains
Code: Select all
example.com

and
Code: Select all
example.net
(SAN),
also valid for the IP address 10.0.0.1 (SAN),
relatively strong (as of 2020) and
valid for 3650 days (~10 years).

It creates the following files:

Private key: example.key
Certificate: example.crt
[/code]

All information is provided at the command line. There is no interactive input that annoys you. There are no config files you have to mess around with. All necessary steps are executed by a single OpenSSL invocation: from private key generation up to the self-signed certificate.

Remark #1: Crypto parameters

Since the certificate is self-signed and needs to be accepted by users manually, it doesn't make sense to use a short expiration or weak cryptography.

In the future, you might want to use more than 4096 bits for the RSA key and a hash algorithm stronger than sha256, but as of 2020 these are sane values. They are sufficiently strong while being supported by all modern browsers.

Remark #2: Parameter "-nodes"

Theoretically we could leave out the -nodes parameter (which means "no DES encryption"), in which case example.key would be encrypted with a password. However, this is almost never useful for a server installation, because you would either have to store the password on the server as well, or you'd have to enter it manually on each reboot.

the question is: Is it possible to do self signed certification a website without domain name?
I have read that we can do this with the servicelet'sencrypt.org: it seems so that it does not issue certificate for having no domain name. i have heard about various options and methods that i have described above.

Re: Wordpress

Hallo Nobbie, hallo Altrera,

vorweg:

Re: Error 404

This thread is going to a very wrong direction here.

Nobbie is correct with his suggestion about hidden file extensions for the following hints:
- You said you have tested with three different webserver stacks and all of them are showing this behavior. This makes a xampp based issue very unlikely.
- the majority of the issues at this forum here with not found webserver ressources are based on user actions, like typos, wrong editor, hidden file extensions, etc.

It is valid to push you in this direction, because it is the most common one.

I see only these possible reasons for your problem here (ordered, started with the less common one up to the most common ones):
- a operating stack issue related to your loopback adapter (reset your ip stack and winsock)
- a browser configuration issue like auto proxy configuration, browser plugins (commonly in commercial environment)
- a different name resolution issue related to localhost (like DNS, HOSTS file, etc)
- a user based Apache config issue by changing any of the configs
- a user based error report information issue like telling us something wrong or hiding some information
- a basic user action issue like using the wrong editor, typo in filename or url, etc.

Because i have not enough information to narrow this problem down (and because i don't like the direction of this thread here), i will stop investing any more time here.

You are asking for help here. You should be polite and answer our questions to trying to help you identifying the issue. Not the other way round.

Re: httpd-vhosts adding a second website

I am running it online, because I want to, if someone hacks me, no big deal, I was hacked when I was on Hostmonster as well, its not a business site, its a hobby. If it goes down,no big deal, it goes down, I do backups myself. I don't need to be sold on the virtues a a host provider, I did that for 15 years, now I am choosing to run my own server. If you can help, please do so, if you cannot, why are you here?

As for costing me more than hosted space you are dead wrong, as verified by my digital wattmeter, you sound like a sales agent for a commercial host. I simply am asking, trying to learn as a hobby, I am as a 65 year old I don't need someone giving me the gears on what I choose to do, if you can help, I appreciate it, if your just here to give me a hard time, I don't appreciate it.
